Full Spectrum Laser’s in-house software Retina Engrave v3, known as RE3, is a robust program equipped with a diverse range of functions meant to harness the full potential of our machines. The Intro to RE3 articles are meant to provide you an in depth understanding of Retina Engrave v3. We will break down each feature and provide practical examples for every function. By the end, you should be equipped with the knowledge needed to create outstanding projects on RE3. This article will cover the AI functions.
AI Features:
Due to its advanced AI features, Retina Engrave needs internet connectivity to function. Two AI functions are located in the main menu tab: the AI Object Menu and the Image Generator.
Object Menu:
The Find Objects icon is used to detect multiple objects within the workspace. In order to use this function a screenshot of the workspace needs to be taken.
After taking the Screenshot, hold the Shift key and select a few spots on the present objects, then hold the Shift and Alt keys to select background spots. Once completed, select the Find Objects icon.
The AI will then identify the objects, highlight the perimeter and calculate the center of each object. The width is displayed in red, while the height will be displayed in green.
Limitation: Some part of the background maybe added to the perimeter. If that occurs, it can be removed by using the Shift and Alt keys to identify it as background then select the Find Object icon again.
Objects:
Vector and Raster objects can be selected and placed onto the center of each perimeter using the Align icon. Keep in mind that the AI will not resize the selected objects, it will only place the object at the center. Therefore you will need to resize the object yourself.
Text:
There are two methods to align text.
1. The Textbox Options:
Selecting the written text. Then select the Align icon. The text will be placed at the center of the perimeters. If the object needs to be numbered select the Auto Increment option from the Text window.
2. The Advance Settings:(Sidebar)
By selecting the down arrow, a side bar will appear showing the settings for all the identified objects. The horizontal and vertical offset can be set here, as well as the angle for the object.
The text of the objects can be placed under the Replacement Text window. The text for each object can be written down and separated from each other using the ; key, as shown in the picture.
Use the ok button to save the settings. Then select the Align option.
Image Generator:
There are many times when you want to engrave an image onto a material but are unsure if your drawing will meet the image you have in mind. Our AI can generate raster images to help streamline the process.
How does it work? AI are usually given datasets to help them learn about the tasks they are given, in this case a bank of pictures. The user gives the AI a text prompt which it used to generate keywords to search its database. The images in the database are then analyzed and used to create a new image.
In order to use this text to image function internet connection is required. Enter Retina Engrave3 and locate the Generate image from text option. Select the down arrow on the right of the box to open the prompt window. Type the image idea, select the ok icon, then select the Generate option.
Background Removal:
When engraving on a laser, the image needed to be changed in some way: be it simple cropping or more complicated things like removing background features with a program like photoshop. By using an image recognition algorithm, AI programs can identify the subject of the image and remove any unwanted background.
Removing the background can be done from the Raster Properties section. The background will be replaced with the background color of your choice. The white background is selected for normal engravings while the black background is used for images that are going to be inverted.
