One feature laser users often forget is the significance of laser focus. If a laser beam is not properly focused, it can result in the laser not marking at all. The diagram below shows how the laser engraver uses the focus lens to concentrate the laser beam. The area where the laser beam is able to perform an engraving is called the Depth of Focus or DOF. This area is dependent on the lens purchase but is usually 1 to 2 millimeters large. If your machine is not in focus then it can't engrave your materials.
Visual Cues :
There are visual cues that can be used to make sure your Galvo is in focus. As your machine moves up and down the Z- stage the red diode will change shape according to the diagram. As you lower the stage, the laser beam will get smaller and clearer until it reaches the focal spot. A focal test can also be used to confirm your machines focus distance.
